trial work period
(SSDI)

Ease into working without the fear of losing everything at once. For up to nine months, you can test your ability to work while still receiving your full benefits, no matter how much you earn during that time. It’s a real trial run, with no penalty for giving it a try.

Extended Period of Eligibility
(SSDI)

After your trial period, you can keep receiving benefits for 36 more months in any month your earnings fall below the substantial gainful activity limit.

Gradual Benefit Reduction (SSI)

SSI works differently than SSDI. Your check adjusts gradually as you earn more, and Medicaid can often continue even if your cash payment drops to zero. SSI also ignores the first portion of your monthly earnings before reducing your check, so working still pays off.

While you’re making steady progress, Social Security won’t conduct a Continuing Disability Review, and Medicare coverage can continue for a period even after your cash benefits stop.
