From Caregiver to Trailblazer: Melissa’s Journey Through Vision Loss

For nearly a decade, Melissa Vega dedicated her life to caring for others as a certified nursing assistant (CNA). Her compassion and commitment to helping people defined her, but in May 2021, life took an unexpected turn. At just 31 years old, Melissa began losing her vision—a challenge compounded by the sudden loss of her brother, with whom she shared a special bond.

Initially attributing her vision changes to stress, Melissa discovered she was experiencing Hypertensive Retinopathy, a condition with a cause that remains a medical mystery in her case. Despite seeking answers from numerous specialists, the cause of her vision loss remained elusive. Her determination to persevere was tested when she ultimately had to leave the career she loved, due to her deteriorating eyesight.

Melissa’s journey through vision loss was emotionally and mentally overwhelming. Adjusting to a “new normal” was difficult, especially as she faced moments of grief and isolation. Yet, through the support of her church, family, and friends, Melissa found the strength to keep moving forward.

In October 2023, Melissa joined NewView Oklahoma’s MOVE program (More Opportunities through Vocational Evaluation) — a pivotal decision that empowered her to reclaim her independence and rejoin the workforce. Melissa was trained on navigating a computer and essential programs using Assistive Technology and Low Vision Aids.

One of the most challenging things for clients to overcome is navigating to/from home and work, including the use of a cane and public transportation. “MOVE prepared me not only for the workforce but for life,” she says. “Knowing how to use the tools I need as my vision changes has been life-changing.”

The MOVE program also rekindled Melissa’s independence as well as her creative spirit, introducing her to new talents like crafting clay jewelry. These moments of discovery brought joy and a renewed sense of purpose.

Melissa now works at NewView Oklahoma as a receptionist, a role that feels like a perfect fit. She finds fulfillment in helping others and providing support to those walking a similar path. Her position allows her to share her story with clients, sparking hope in those navigating the uncertainties of vision loss.

“I know that feeling of hopelessness—thinking life will never be the same,” Melissa reflects. “But when you talk to someone who’s been in your shoes and see them living a normal life, it sparks hope. That’s what I want to share with others.”

Melissa’s journey is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the power of community. Through her work and her story, she inspires others to embrace the possibilities that lie ahead, reminding them that vision loss doesn’t mark the end—it’s a new beginning.

At NewView, Melissa has found not just a job, but a purpose and a place where she can thrive. “Being here is such a blessing,” she says. “This is where I’m meant to be.”
